Howard ain't quite number one in Portland -- number 5 or 6 in the summer rating book.
You know, Howard does have some great talent, it's unfortunate most of his bits are below
the belt. He could be so much more effective with less lewdness -- or maybe not? Maybe
that's his claim to fame.

Yeah, you can tell that Lars is not in to the movie review thing like his predecessor,
Bill Gallagher. On the otherhand, Lars is an excellent interviewer and articulate in
conveying his views of political topics on KXL.
I enjoy KINK's musical variety and intelligent presentation of music. Les and Mike in
the morning are concise and topical. I think like most other cities, Portland has many
radio stations with unoriginal boring corporate programming. But, in the muck there are a
few glowing gems of talent and uniqueness.

I've lived and traveled all over this country and except for Stern Portland radio is
GODAWFUL. Has anyone ever tried to listen to KINK? How about HOT TALK KOTK? Ric Emerson?
Leykis? It's all unlistenable. I have tried on numerous occasions to tune into Lars
Larson's Friday afternoon movie hour only to turn it off in incredulous disgust after Lars
and his caller reviewers get the names of every movie, actor, or director wrong. On the
plus side, there's Stern, Phil Hendrie, Colin Cowherd, Jim Rome, Victoria Taft once in
awhile- hey, when's Bill Gallagher coming back? Oh, and KGON- do you think you could
sqeeze in a little more Boston? Hearing them EVERY TIME I pass by this station just isn't
enough for me. Have a good day everybody

I agree with you. He has a great "radio voice", but he is boooooring.
Fortunately, he is only temporary until they sign on a regular host.
I hope they get someone like Francine Rafton, who was on the talk station a decade ago
when the call letters was KGW or convince Marge Boule to take on a second job. She is
doing a terrific job filling in this week.

I don't like that new morning guy on KEWS. He sounds too much like a typical New Yorker
smartaleck. And, they have the gall to let him broadcast the show from his home studio in
NY. Boy, what will they think of next?

Just a couple of new websites - KISN is www.kisnfm.com
and KKGT is under construction but their site is www.greattalk1150am.com.
This isnt exactly the nature of this site but I see some interesting AM
applications. KEWS is moving to the KEX towers, KEX has figured a way to get some east
pattern at night, KFFX is planning to double power with different patterns than they have
now which should improve the south null and KVAN is also improving their south null at
night with slightly more power and going to 50kw non-directional during the daytime. This
last part confuses me. It sounds like it would interfere with the 25 millivolt contour of
KKSN AM. If anyone can explain this to me, I would appreciate it. I continue to really
enjoy your column. Keep it up!

I really enjoy listening to the radio on Saturdays except for the two hours between 11
AM and 1 PM. Michael Feldman is altogether too fascinated with male (and today it was
female) genitalia. Today I was running errands and every time I returned to the car and
turned on the radio, it was "...clitoris ..."
His double-meaninged wise cracks make for a show that I think is simply too vulgar for
the middle of the day sandwiched between Car Talk and Splendid Table. If I had children I
wouldnt ever listen. But since its just me, I leave it on unless I really
cant stand it, then I turn it off.
Cant you find some other programming that would work better in the middle of the
day and relegate this to late evening?

Dear OPB - I am a regular listener, and enjoy most of your news and
other broadcasts. However, I find your reporting of the latest gun control posturing in
congress as totally shallow and biased. You suggest all Repubicans are "pro-gun"

Yesterday my children woke up to the morning folks polling people as to where the most
unusual place they have "made whoopie". Yes, they spoke in code when posing the
question, but the answers were pretty explicit. My children got the message loud and clear
what it was they were talking about...hmmm, has Portlands #2 station figured it
necessary to go the way of Howard Stern to keep its rating? The subject matter was
inappropriate, the comments by the DJs were more than a bit crude. What came over
the radio waves was rated R, so I turned it off and went on my way. The next day, the
"whoopie" question was again posed AFTER listeners were told that several
parents & non-parents had complained about the content...we were told that this was no
worse than what is shown on network TV (ooohhh, holding your standards up high, KUPL?!?)
and that if we listeners were bothered, we should simply turn off the radio for the next
30 to 40 minutes.
You know how I now spell country? KWJJ!

Could someone Please send this on to Bill Gallagher?
Mr. Gallagher
I used to hear your show on occasion and liked it well enough.
Then I started listening to Mr Lie-cuss, he was funny and he stirred stuff up,
but he seemed sleazy but still I tuned in to make the commute interesting
After hearing what he had to say about your comments/cancellation/Dad etc. I am making
a pledge to Never listen to the Lie-cuss show again ever.
Lie-cuss is a heartless sleazeball abitious bigmouth (I say that with all due respect).

Who bought KXYQ? KCKX has been simulcasting some dandy old country western music with
even a few PDX advertisers. But this week, KCKX is regretfully announcing that 1010 has
sold and the format will be changed as of 6/1.
Gee, I hope 1010 isnt going all-talk or something else that doesnt count as
music.
Hope to see some news posted on your website soon.

I
was greatly offended by This American Life which aired on Wednesday night. In this
broadcast, a homosexual man joked about how it was easier to lust after men at any
opportunity because he had a baby with him. This is not humor, this is depravity. Why
would you air such a program? ...And you ask for donations to promote this cause... never.

My apologies to all of you who wrote to say how much you
dislike the new format offered by KXL 95.5. Oregon and Portland in particular has prided
itself on the acceptance of "diversity." We talk about respecting those
individuals and viewpoints that are "different." We give platitudes and awards
for this celebration of diversity. I have lived in Portland now for 46 years. During that
time I have always found it interesting how people of color are treated from an
entertainment perspective. As a young man in my 20s I would attempt to find
nightclubs that catered to the likes of African-Americans. To my dismay there were
few. When I did find them (as did other African-Americans, Anglos,
Latinos, et.al) within a several month period the format would change. This happened
to often to be coincidence. We jokingly would say, "well, how soon will this club go
from a few R&B songs to country and western?" It always seemed that when the word
got around that a club played R&B, soul, etc., as soon as African-Americans
(especially males) started to come to the place, suddenly a format change would occur. Now
at 46 I dont go to the old places any more (no more Stuart Andersons, and
other "hip places"). Give me a good blues bar (Candlelight Room) and Im
happy! Yet when I talk to my nephews and nieces I hear that the same thing continues to
happen. So I must assume that "diversity-acceptance" is not as it would seem. |
However, the story at hand is not about clubs, but about
the radio station. Oregon as a state is 96.7% (+/-) Anglo. Portland and the surrounding
metro area is about 86% (+/-) Anglo. The largest percentage of the states minority
population is found in a 75 mile radius paralleling the I-5 corridor. However, this
station did not make a decision to change its radio format simply because of the 8%
African-American population or the Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander or Native American
population. It did so because the demographics (urban), 15-30 year old population (read
consumers, mall shoppers, CD buyers, etc.) made economic sense to do so. AND it must be
noted: it was a good thing to do!!! The unfortunate thing prior to the format change was
that you could hear the same music on 95.5 as you heard on KINK, as you heard on KKRZ, as
you heard on 103, as you heard on 104.7. Diversity was hearing music on the Country and
Western channels (and they all played the same songs too)! In reality folks (with the
exception of KBOO Community Radio which has played R&B in its myriad formsi.e.,
Soul, Blues, Hip Hop, Rap, et.al for years), this station actually represents Diversity in
Music in the Portland Metropolitan area. I too admit that as a former listener of 95.5 I
enjoyed the sounds of Jackson Browne, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, James Taylor (his
live double CD still stands as one of the greatest CDs out). And still do! Now when
I feel the urge for some diversity I just plug those sounds into my CD player and listen.
:-) But when I feel the need to hear nothing but R&B, rap and soul sounds I smile and
turn to JAMMIN 95.5. :-) |
There is room in this wonderful city for music diversity!
Do not let your minds eye blind you from the wonderful rhythmic sounds that are
R&B. We didnt fight for peace, love and acceptance in the 60s and
70s for nothing. |
PEACE OUT!!!! |

Some trivia and history I recall re Portland radio.
The top-rated MOR station in the 1960s was KEX, which was then owned by Golden West
Broadcasters (Gene Autrey) and had switched formats from Top-40 (or Top 33 in this case).
The DJ line-up was roughly as follows: |
6-10:00 a.m. Barney Keep
10:00-1:00 p.m. Ric Thomas
1:00-4:00 p.m. Ted Rogers
4:00-7:00 p.m. Jack Angel
7:00-9:00 Art Smart
9:00-12:00 Steve Davis
12:00-6:00 a.m. Russ Conrad
Jack Angel, in the late 1960s, moved to Golden Wests KMPC-Los Angeles. Steve
Davis went to KGO San Francisco at some point to do newstalk. I lost track of the rest of
the pack and would be interested to know what became of them, if anyone knows. |
As for Top-40, the 1960s were the glory days for 91/KISN. For a time, KISN afternoon
drive jock was the legendary The Real Don Steele, who became "Emperor of North
America." There was probably no better rocker at the time than KISN. |

To all the people complaining about the music change on 95.5......this
is the best format change the station could ever do. The people want R&B and hip hop
music. The only time you could listen to R&B was on KBOO- 90.7 at night. Paul Allen
beat me to the punch starting this radio station. The station will be number one in the
area by the end of the summer. If u are too old for this music or just don't appreciate

Due to a contract negotiation John and Ken quit their syndicated talk
show that us Portlanders were able to listen to on KXL weekdays from 6-10pm. So what did
the intelligent powers that be do with that time slot where listeners were trained to tune
in and listen to the lighter side of what is going on in the world today? They put on some
boring financial advice guy. Even when they got an awesome duo of their own
(Portlands funniest!) languishing away on Sundays. Tune in to them at KXL 750 from
noon to 3pm, and if you agree they are the more deserving replacement for John and Ken,
email KXL from their website at KXL.com. I asked, and Dave and Dwight said they would love
the slot if offered. Portland has got enough serious talk show, I can only take so much
ranting each day, so let KXL know its time for a laugh or two in the evenings! |

id just like to say that changing 95.5 to Jammin was the best
move anybody has ever done in portland radio history. Portland has been craving a Hip Hop
station for a LONG TIME and finally, someone got smart and started up one! From my point
of view, this was a smart business and PR move.. i mean, the old 95.5 wasnt doing too well
on the charts, i dont think... this move will definately change that.. look for 95.5 to
quickly climb the ratings and become the #1 station in town knocking off Z100
(finally...). i KNOW FOR SURE that all the people i know have their car stereos tuned into
this station now.. and i mean, walk into your local Magnolia, Car TOys, Car Stero City and
youll hear this station being played on all those "demo" decks!!! |
For those of you who miss your old station, sorry... but in this world,
if you want to stay afloat and make money, you gotta give the people what they want...
yes, 95.5 will lose some, if not most of their old listeners... BUT, for every listener
they lost.. they gained 20-25 NEW listeners when they switched over to the new style on
March 26th (including me, my sister, my extended family and all my friends)!!! |
So anyways, tell everyone down at Jammin that theyre doing a good
job (as if they need ME to tell them that, hehe..) ... and altho theyll NEVER be as
good as WILD949 down in the Bay Area... at least theyre trying... oh, and one more
thing... could someone tell em to PLEAAZE hire some djs who TALK!, do a
morning show... or better yet, NOON TIME DJ MIXES and a Hip Hop version of the Saturday
Nite Dance Party (like on Z100, but with more of a Jammin flavor).. then this station will
REALLY be "OFF THE HOOK"! |

Paul Allen is to be thanked for the Blazers but not his choice to
change 95.5. This station was aired at the coast in restraunts and over some of the cable
advertising channels. What they are playing now is pure puke. I used to spend money with
its advertisers. Good bye KXL, you have been removed from my dials. |

From the stories Ive been able to track down a Portland radio station
was the first to edit "Everybodys Free (To Wear Sunscreen)"
and play it on the air in the US. It has since crept across the nation. |
Ive found the unedited version. I like the radio remix better.
The problem is that the (unedited) song hasnt been, and probably wont be,
released as a single... and even if it had it then still might not have the edited version
w/o the singing. |
SO... Does anyone know which radio station originally "fixed"
this song? |
Also, Does anyone know where I could get a clean copy (MP3?)? |

Hi,
I wondered if you know of any site that lists the radio stations for the
Eugene/Springfield, Oregon area? I really need to find out about KDOT 104.7. Anything
would help as I need to know this by Monday. |
Thanks,

This is in regards to the changing of KXL 95.5s format. I felt the old
95.5 was the best radio station in Portland! I woke up to it every morning,
and listened to it on my way to work every day. It was where "The music
matters most", remember? Now it is terriable! I dont know whos
decision
this was, but Portland has enough Z100 type stations, and we do not need one
more! You have lost two listeners, my husband and myself. We will really
miss the old and "great" 95.5 :(

Just wanted to say that I am quite sad to see that 95.5fm has evolved
into "Jammin 95." Whose outlandish idea was that? 95.5 lived up to their
motto "Where the music matters most." No gimmicks, just great, listenable music.
I sat through one song on "Jammin" and quickly changed the station for good. The
saddest thing about it is there is no longer a station in Portland to listen to. K103 is
too mellow and Mariah Carey and Celine Dion make me want to pull my hair out. KINK is...
well, God knows what they are on any given day. In a constant state of flux. And everyone
else just repeats the same songs over and over and over again until you want to remove the
car stereo and fling it out the window. Guess it is time to invest in a CD player for the
car. But it doesnt seem that 95.5 was given a fair shake... and now I desperately
want it back. PLEASE BRING IT BACK. |

It's to bad you had to sell out for the crap that lots of other
channels already play. Now you have left a void in air play for tasteful music. I
certainly hope you regret your change in format. I will miss the popular 95.5 on my
shower radio, car stereo, and home entertainment system. I guess it just another example
that the average about medium income, 30-40 old white male, home owner doesn't have a say
in a decent radio station. Country, Hard Rock and that other crap (like your new format)
are already covered by others, your old format was unique and fresh. I hope others share
the frustration that I feel. I moved here from a location that had three basic
music formats, and I thought this area was different until now.
|
I'm sure my comments won't change anything but where I will now
spend my time and money will certainly increase my CD collection any tune out where the
advertisers what me to spend my cash. |

Hi, and thanks for the history page and all the airchecks from the old days. I was
especially glad to hear KGW from the mid-70s, since they were the big power here in
those times, and I listened to them almost exclusively during my college days. Got any KEX
from that time frame? |

To my surprise, I tuned in 95.5 FM on Friday evening, 3/26, to discover that a new
format was started. I must say that I am very impressed to see that the Portland market
finally has an FM station that specializes in R&B and hip-hop music!!! I used to
complain that Portland radio stations all played the same boring artists, but not anymore.
I can get my R&B from 95.5, top 40 from Z100, alternative from KNRK and The Beat, and
adult alternative from KINK. Im in heaven!!! |
To those at Jammin 95.5, great format choice!!!!

Hi,
I would just like to say that I am sick and tired of the DJs on KKRZ. Especially the
morning zoo! As a teen who like the MUSIC they play, I dont enjoy the cussing nor
the the cutting down of my favorite artists. Do they think theyre funny or
something? |
Please do not post my e-mail address.
Thank you. Steph

A radio station I heard and have never forgotten when I in
Portland in December 1992 for a month. |
It was on every morning around 6 a.m. |
The music is unexplainable - but will try. Sort
of mixed-together old-time 30-40's popular, country, funny. It was so
wonderful. The program was so well put together. |
I'm wondering if anyone remembers and if they hopefully
are still playing this and can give me an answer. |

I love your site! The best radio site I have yet seen...
About talk.htm . . . Don't mean to nitpick, but Dr. Laura Schlessinger is
based out of L.A. She got her start on the legendary KFI (same station that
John and Ken (hint, hint) are broadcasted out of), although she now operates
from another company in the San Fernando Valley.

Last weekend I heard Shawn David Morton on your radio station and I wanted to know if
you would carry this program full time instead of ................................. ( the
.boring program that no one calls into anyway and he gets upset and stays only for two
hours or so on the air and then it goes into repeats over and over
again.)........................................................... the Stan Major program
as I think it is more informative and would have good compitation qualities against the
already popular Art Bell show-------Thanks for reading this. Other wise K-VAN has really
done a remarkable job revamping its programing.and I enjoy listening. |
THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION!

Could you possibly tell me whether there are any communications antennae on South
Saddle Mountain between Portland and Tillamook? As far as I can tell, the mountain is the
highest point in the area between Portland and Tillamook. |
I cant find any towers in the area in the databases, but thought Id drop
you a note for some local input. |
We have a client who may have a need for one there. |
I picked up your email address from the SBE site, which is excellent, by the way. |

Am I the only person who is irked by the fact that KKSN always seems to
go to mono when they broadcast Dick Bartleys "Rock and Rolls Greatest
Hits" on Saturday nights? |
Here you have a guy who makes the effort to search out and broadcast
often hard-to-find stereo versions of 1950s and 1960s rock and roll, and the
fruits of his labor go for naught in PDX because somebody either doesnt care about
quality or doesnt know how to work a satellite feed. Occasionally they dont
even broadcast the sum of the left and right channels, but just one (or the other) for
their mono signal, which results in songs with lead vocals buried in the background or
odd-sounding instrumental breaks. |
Ive tried a couple of times to lodge a complaint, but nobody
seems to be listening. |
Aaaaarrgh...........

Thank you for playing the Vengaboys. It is a mystery to me how a group
would seem to be so popular everywhere else in the world and be
virtually unknown in PDX. Sometimes I feel like we are living in the
dark ages here. Nobody at the record stores has heard of them. Please
play "Were going to Ibitsu" for me Thank you,

To Whom it May Concern,
I was looking at your site and noticed that KKRZ is the number one radio station...
Well, I do have to say, when I first moved to Portland they were my number one choice
also. However, when my alarm went off this morning there was a man on the station that was
imitating Barney. You know the purple dinosaur kids look up to. Well, this man was gross.
I feel for all the kids who heard him this morning. As he was promoting drugs, alcohol,
and sex. I have a two year old daughter and I wouldnt allow her to listen to that.
Because of this horrid man I will no longer listen to KKRZ... They are a disgrace to
radio. |
Sincerely,
An Angry Mother

Dear OPB radio news staff:
My husband and I have been frustrated over the years that any time theres an
election in Clark County, Washington, where a sizeable number of your listeners live, we
cant get the results from OPB. This is particularly true with school elections. |
On Feb. 2 three Clark County school districts ran bond and levy elections. These were
issues vital to the three communities. We heard not one word about them the following
morning. On another occasion, you reported Seattle school election results but still
ignored what was happening in your own listening area. |
We are quite sure you subscribe to The Columbian, since we have heard Columbian
stories (even my husbands) read word-for-word on OPB. Reading that newspaper should
give you all the information you need to know when Clark County elections are scheduled.
To get election results, you need only call the Clark County Elections Office, (360)
397-2345. |
We really dont like to have to switch from our favorite radio station to get
news of importance to us, so I hope you will consider paying attention to the orphaned
Washingtonians who have no broadcasting source to call our own. |
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Mary Sisson

I am currenlty residing in Oklahoma. I am orginally from Portland
Oregon. The radio station here does not hold a candle to the morning zoo...I though maybe
they should shadow Valerie Ring, and Nelson and get a clue as to what funny is!!! Do they
have a web site that I can visit them at. Hopefully one day soon I will be able to return
to Oregon to enjoy my morning zoo again. (currently serving time as a military wife.) |
Thanks
Happy Reading!!

Im disturbed to hear a couple of very strange noises which have
recently ............... themselves into your station. I cannot conceive of where they
came from. Only, I do know that they are very annoying and divert my attention from the
program. |
The first noise is in the background, sometimes reasonably quiet, and
sometimes strident, like some child hammering away on a set of bongo drums. Sometime this
yatterings so loud it comes close to drown out the program. And it seems to occur
during weather forcasts. Whatever, its most objectionable. |
The second ones quite different, and probably comes from a
different source. This sounds like a giant sneeze! It usually occurs when news headlines
are being announced. |
Like (SNEEZE!!) "Today Clinton was impeached" (SNEEZE!!)
"This morning, Hussein, King of Jordan passed away" (SNEEZE!!) " etc
etc" These noises intrude so much into your programs that I regretfully have to tune
to another station. |
Incidentally, while Ive got you on line, could you tell that
female on |
your staff that theres no such word in any language I know of, as
LUMBERS |
And further, Id like to say how much I appreciate Handel,
Victoria Taft, Limbaugh, and especially Bill Galagher (One l or two??) |
Keep up the good work, but please quit those NOISES!!
(Maybe theyre poltergeists)

Since I started riding MAX, the one thing I miss is listening to the
radio. So I went out and bought my first walk-man in years. It did not even occur to me
