We are a 100,000 watt A/C station, KMCQ, in the Columbia River Gorge,
with an opening for an AM Personality. We are not a satellite
station-we program our own music and are live and local. We are known
for our contests and community events, and also for our Recreation
Reports, like Bart's Best Bet for Wind and Recreation. If you'd like to
live in "recreation heaven" and work for a great station, call 1-800

Per TV Click, there are many AM Stereo stations in Portland when in fact
only 860, 1040, 1290 and 1520 currently have a "stereo" signal. What
happened to the others?

At 3:30pm, on KOAC Portland,OR 550AM, there was a
story about scientists uncovering objects inside
of humans and not sure what the objects were. Is there
more on that story? Given the time on NPR radio
from OPB; It probably is the "The World" program,
although I am not sure. Any clues? It was some
scientific conference from Chile or Brazil I think.

I am enquiring about a program I listened to yesterday evening at 8pm, about a
lecture given by one Michael on national media. I understand this Michael was
once a professor at this particular university in VT where the lecture took
place.
I will be grateful if someone can me locate this lecture and tell me of the
cost of audio tape of the program.

Hey, you've missed the boat if you haven't included Ron Leonard or Dancin'
Danny Wright to your tapes of 1981. KMJK was the hottest station from 79-81
and they are not represented. Just let me know where to the tapes and I'll
mail you some REALLY good stuff.
Thanks!

I was wondering if your radio station would be able to direct me to some
local bands that play wedding receptions, parties etc. My fiance and I
will be getting married next summer and would like to have live music. We
were thinking about music thats not too mellow, but not Kenny G. style
either. Thank you for any information you have.

Is there any station in the Portland Metropolitan area that
broadcasts Howard Stern's show?
I'm reading his book and have no doubt that he would be more
entertaining than Imus, or Mark & Brian.

Hi!
Ok, you asked and here are some of my thoughts.
I am somewhat disappointed a Jacor's changes for KEX and "K-news" ( which
will always be KGW to me). I was hoping that "K-news" would be exactly that,
news 24 hours a day like CKWX in Vancouver, BC, KCBS, KNX and other major
market stations. On the other hand I was hoping that KEX would be (mostly)
talk with mostly local talk. Or if nothing else, KXL would be a good choice
for a 24 hour news station. Maybe we'll have one someday.
Once WOWO makes their change in nighttime pattern and power, KEX should jump
on expanding their east and southern patterns before the FCC decides to put
another 100 stations on 1190. I have an old nighttime area coverage map
which shows more of a signal to the south than the current pattern in the NRC
Nighttime pattern book, which shows all of their signal heading to the
northwest. KEX is the only station from Oregon that you can hear in many
places at night and they need to protect that.
Good move by KWJJ to switch formats to talk. Nice to hear the I-man back on.

I'm trying to track down Mark Benecke. I worked at KSEM in Moses Lake with

a country station in Portland.
Any chance you've heard of him or where he's working?

Just thought you'd like to know...many of 'NRK's faithful morning show
listeners swear they heard Mike Chase offer a snowboard to ANYONE who
could get on the air with Lars and get the magic phrase "do you have a
plastic ass" on tape. They called KXL upset because their favorite
music station "screwed them". Lars, with the help of KXL management,
decided to ease their suffering by giving 300 shares of Morrow
Snowboard stock to 30 lucky listeners. Why only buy from the company
when you can own part of it? On top of that... the owner of Alpine
Sport Haus in Wilsonville happened to be listening to the show and
made an unsolicited offer to our listeners. The first person to walk
in the door of their new store and say, "Lars Larson has a lot of
class!" would receive a complete snowboard package. Board, boots,
bindings and all! According to owner Rob Fernandez... they had a
winner in just minutes and runners-up receieved merchandise discounts.
Isn't it funny that one of our LISTENERS offered more than 'NRK'!

Dear Dan
Today I came across your website contribution, which I really enjoyed.
I am a former broadcaster and now lecture in radio journalism at the London
College of Printing.. probably the best place for aspiring British
broadcasters outside of the BBC.
I am in the process of collecting station jingles from the 50's 60's and
70's for a study and would really appreciate it if you could let me have
copies of any jingles you may have.
I'll understand if you can't help, but please do drop me an e-mail anyway.
Of course, I can arrange for postage and tapes, etc.
Thanks very much.

I am really upset that KOTK is changing its format...I listen to this

Yes! I've got a good reason to listen to talk radio again! Tom Leykis
is back. After being a faithful listener to talk radio for many years,
I was so disappointed when kotk changed to k-news (boring lineup).
I searched the airwaves at that time of day to find some other
interesting shows, but alas nothing of interest. I'm setting my dial to
1080. To whoever is responsible, a big thanks!

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that you've set up a great radio site.
I'm working in my office and I was wondering which radio stations
were internet broadcasting, I found all the info very quickly from
your site.
I've also noticed some of the excitement on the AM band (new stations,
people moving, programs being dropped). It was nice to read up on
all this and find out what was going on.
Keep up the good work!

Do you have any info on Chris Burns? He did a public affairs program
with Mike on KGON around 1977. I would like to contact him if possible.
Thanks for any info you may have.
Other people from that time I would like info on are Gary Smith
from KYXI or was it Gary Johnson. I believe he was the news director.
Also James Jones or Jim Jones. he was a news announcer on KYXI for a
very short time.
I was a news tech at KYXI around 1977. I just moved back to
Portland and am looking for a job. I wonder if there are any board op
jobs open.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

Its nice to hear talk mistress Victoria Taft back on the air. You can hear
the former KXL-AM evening talk show host on 620-AM KEWS on Saturday
mornings from 9:00A-Noon.
Victoria has a high energy approach to her show. She's fun, witty and
doesn't pull any punches. I don't think she suffers any fools.
Its nice to hear a female talk show host for a change. Too bad KXL-AM
didn't leave her alone when Victoria worked for her. KXL's loss is KEWS'
gain.
GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK ON THE AIR VICTORIA!!! :-)

I found your Portland radio site, and since I am desperate for some
information and don't know how else to get it, I'll ask you. Do you know
if any radio station in the Portland area carries a syndicated show
called "In the Studio"? I think it's a weekly one-hour interview show
and the interviewer is someone called "Redbeard"(?) Anyway, I've heard
that this week's show is an interview with Jackson Browne. I'd like to
hear the show, but don't have any idea what station might carry it. Can
you help? Thanks.

Corporate radio JUST DOESN'T GET IT! After serving the NW for at least 30
years-possibly more-as a country music radio station-home to some Portland
radio legends-like Sammy Taylor, Leo Erickson, Chris and Dennis Ackerman,
etc, KWJJ-AM ceases to exist. In its place-a station with "used"
call-letters-KOTK. What's so insideous about all of this is the disregard
the station's owners have for KWJJ's HERITAGE. It was one of the first
stations in Portland to go country. Many of us who got into radio, cut our
teeth listening to the likes of Taylor, Erickson, etall, wishing of the day
we too might be able to sit behind the mikes at the powerful 1080 dial
location.
For years-I've read in the radio trades and heard speeches about how
precious a station's call letters are---how they are to be treated as a
"brand franchise" in the mind of the listener. Obviously the current owners
of KWJJ and also of the former KGW (one of the earliest radio stations on
the air both in Oregon and the West Coast. Now in all fairness to the
current owners of K-NEWS, it isn't their fault for being denied the use of
KGW-AM. That honor goes to the owners of KGW-TV 8, who prohibited the radio
side from using KGW because the TV station owned the "rights" to the call
lettters and would not allow the radio side to carry forth the proud
tradition of that one time top rated, highly popular radio station.
These are further examples of how BIG CORPORATE AMERICA is runing the radio
industry. I just wish there were a Portland Television Station Guide--I'd
really have something to say about the current round of television
newscasts! It continues to be a sad, sad day in radio.

I read your radio guide pages with some frequency. It would be a great help
if you enter a date for all entries in:

This would make it easy to tell what is actually new and provide some

Perhaps a month ago (Sept. 19 seems to ring a bell), you programmed
a Piano Concerto in Eb by Rudolph Gettins (I'm not sure about the
spelling of the last name). The only thing the announcer said in
addition was that he wrote in in 1920. I've asked all my fellow
musician friend - no one has heard of him. Could you do some
searching for me? It would help in locating a recording if I had the
last name correct. Thanks, Tom H.

Thanks for the nice page of information. Sometimes I would like to call the
stations and comment on some news or traffic story and I cannot find their
phone numbers. I must be on another planet, some but not all stations list
their numbers in the Yellow pages but none list in the white pages (where I
would expect to find them).
How about listing a contact phone on the Radio Guide page?
Thanks

Hi...
I'm an independent film director/writer working on a movie based out of
Portland. I am looking for radio sound archives from programming on the
local rock/alternative stations. Also, I am looking for any news radio
archives from 1985 or around then, covering the Rajneeshee scandal and
related Portland hotel bombing.
Do you have any of these things available to listen to or send away for. Any
tid bits would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and service.

I've lived here for seven years and the ONLY station I can tolerate is
KKJZ.
In my quest to find a way to send an e-mail to Westinghouse/CBS or
Westwood One Radio Network or American Radio Systems, I've come up
empty. Even when I can locate KKJZ anywhere on the net, there is no way
to click on to it. Why?
What I want to do is to beg for a good R&B station like KBLX in
Oakland CA., or the one I listened to in Philadelphia about 15 years ago
(don't recall the call letters),
They had GOOD music, Portland stations just plain SUCK! Big time!
This town has more than it's fair share of country, talk, christian
and right wing stations. KKJZ is good, but I like R&B better, and there
is nothing out there for those of us who do.
Any way to persuade one of these mega broadcasting conglomerates to
start one up?

We attended your oldies concert at Oaks Park. We enjoyed it, as the rest of
the crowd, until Paul Revere and the Raiders came on stage. What were you
thinking? We came for the OLDIES!! Did you notice the audience slowly
getting smaller and smaller. We tried to hang on, hoping they would play
oldies, but we couldn't stand it any longer and left early, like many in the
crowd.
Please, next time you book an oldies group for an oldies concert, make sure
they are going to play oldies music. That's what we expected, that's why we
listen to your station, that's why we went to your concert.

I am glad I have this forum to vent my frustrations. I have been
listening to the "new" KINK these past couple weeks. I have gone from

Its a sad time in Portland radio.
A radio station with a decent format down the drain and for what.
Traffic and weather every 10 minutes, Rush Limbaugh, Bill Gallagher.
Sounds like boring KXL?
(sorry- not boring if you are a dittohead or in a coma)
No, it's boring KEWS or K-News. K-News Twenty-Twenty Sports? Give me a
break. This is the most unorginal station going. Alot of people listen
to KOTK because the wanted something different, now Jacor has given us
KXL leftovers and more lame morning news. Who really cares about hearing
the same news stories over and over until 9AM?
Don Imus and Alan Colmes are alot more entertaining than anything else
on the local talk radio dial. I hope for sanity and variety that another
station picks them up.
Thanks KOTK for the memories.

Portland Radio Guide,
I was one of the "right wing nazi's" who followed Rush over to KEWS from
KXL. I enjoy the KEWS line. Of course a change of this magnitude is
going to make people unhappy and disoriented but it really is a small
deal. I listened to KXL for a year and a half and switched tracks the
day Rush moved - no big deal.
I do however, find Dr. Laura to be very opinionated but you know what?,
that is what she gets paid for. I like listening to all of the losers
she tears into.
K-News is alright. One suggestion would be to up their wattage from
5000 to say 50,000. It is hard to hear sometimes in the outlying areas.
